Haven't been on the forum in a long long time. I thought I would start writing some more, face book doesn't allow a lot of words. Here's my first topic that I want to rant on about. Hygiene !!!! Was reading OK magazine last week and did you know that only 35% of women actually change there gym gear!!! According to them that's true. When I read that I was actually shocked and horrified to be honest. I¡¦m not on targeting anyone, I'm just writing about what I read. Being in the health and fitness industry myself I know the hygiene topic has been brought up before. I do think in our business "Martial Arts" gloves should be changed every 4 to 6 months depending on how much you use them, sparring gear should be wiped down every time it is used IE that's why sweat towels are important. If you sweat in your clothes they should be changed ie that's why you should change t shirts going from one class to the next. Also we do a lot of partner stuff in class and it is not fair on them. Dirty clothes, dirty gym gear and dirty equipment carry bacteria. I know your probably reading this and saying " we know all this already" but do you ?. This is just one of my rants and can safely say me as a women I change my gym gear everyday, I couldn¡¦t put the same clothes in my bag and take them out the next day and go again. There you go

Yep. just got some new frabreze stuff for my gear. sparring gear is the hardest to take care of but anyone who throws sweaty gear into a bag and then pulls it back out to wear the next day is an animal. a smelly animal ha ha ha

It is only good manners. I change t-shirt after every class and go barefoot if I think socks have seen enough action. I had a private student who will remain unnamed but Rob knows who it was who had stshirt in boot of car for days after using it and would wear it again I just could not go near him lol

No doubt you are all aware that most infections are spread by hand. All students must buy their own gloves and I really think they should be encouraged to buy their own set of focus mitts too. I don't think the club should have to supply them for students. After all, they are part of the gear needed for training, just like gloves. I wonder how many sweaty hands have been inside the clubs focus mitts? Maybe a price reduction might be an incentive . (I bought my own set years ago when I started training in DN 15). Just a thought as we should all take hygiene more seriously and thanks to Louise for raising the issue.

Good point Kieran. We've been trying to encourage people getting their own focus mitts for years and even the half price summer sale didn't sell any. I'm guessing people think that buying mitts is a purchase for other people to hit?! Good news is that we don't actually use the mitts much in class. We use techniques on the gloves instead. And we actually do wash them once a week in anti bacterial stuff.

Its handy to keep a little steri gel bottle in your bag as well for after training for your hands/equipment. You can get them for €2 in most pharmacies.
