Well what can I say.. What a great day it was for Martial Arts Incorporated and our students!
We had close to twenty of our members compete at last Saturday's competition and we have an amazing set of results. The day had it's usual Saturday morning feel of nervousness and hope, and that was just from me! I knew we had a fair few going but the amount of our members there was quite impressive. From early morning we had plenty there and the number increased as the morning passed. Kids, teens and adults from all ages and divisions were there and were keen on doing well. The day had started at 9.30am for most of them with registration for the kids closing at 10.30am, with the adult's cut off point at 12pm.
If you've experienced Best of the Best in the past you know it's a long day and you know the bulk of the day is waiting for your section to be called but in fairness the majority doing it knew what to expect. It was also great to see the great patience of some of the parents that were there and showed constant support for their son/daughter throughout the day. A lot of the kids were competing for the first time and it was great to see the more experienced kids who have competed in the past help out the new ones and it was refreshing to see.
Right, on to the fights and how everyone got on. I will start with the kids!
Well from memory, we had Richard Todea who was fighting first in the Points section, he done very well, coming first place in the White-Orange Belt section. He listened, did his job and performed very well. We then had my little buddy, Serena Magjypi, and with her fearless attitude at the tender age of 7, she got to the final with her great kicks and came second, the experience she is getting at this age is great and she fought very well. Finn Walsh, Patrick Flynn, Callum Freeney all deserve a special mention as they competed for the very first time, 2 of them only starting sparring only a few months ago. Finn came third in the points with another one of our kids, Nathan Todea, utilising his defensive side to perfection and coming first using it routinely, I counted 5 kicks to head from him and that was well deserved, he trains hard, like his older brother Richard and I was very proud of them all.
Next is the teens, well our 4 warriors in Kayleigh Coady, Ella McFarland, Leanora Magjypi and Amy Coady.
These four girls are regulars in D7, constantly train hard, are constantly here and are regulars in the Leadership Program and are a massive help to me too. It was Kayleigh and Amy's first competition and the way they fought I was super impressed with. They listened to me from the start, got stuck in and showed that grit and determination that they show in the club. There has been a big change in them over the summer and that showed with the results they got, both getting to the final in their sections. Kayleigh, final of continuous, battled and showed a side of her I never seen before! Ha, Amy the same, listening throughout, they earned 3 medals between them which is a super result for the sisters, well done girls! Leanora fought in a very close contest and done extremely well and was just short in the fight but that won't affect her, she, like the other 3, have bright futures in this sport and will perform even better at the next one, that's what she does! Third place in the points she got, while Ella fought in the final against a well more experienced girl but she unfortunately didn't get what she wanted, she showed she was able to give it her all and will put it back into her training. Anyone that trains in D7 knows these all train hard and all will be down this week training just as hard, well done to the teen girls!
Arnie, one of the up and comers at MAI fought brilliantly. I didn't see his points but I know it was a close contest and there was one point in it. I was there for his continuous! He showed why he is so talented with beautiful technique, great control and breezed his way to first place of the Purple-Green section. He put in a great performance and I was so proud of him, he was delighted at the end, his dedication: he was down the next day getting his tips for the Brown Belt! Super lad he is and we are lucky to have him. We also had the Jabbarov brothers, Ismail and Osman, and they also did well, coming home with a first and third place in the continuous, well done lads!
Now, I think that's the kids and teens done, once again people, this is from memory so if I have forgotten anything, please post and let us know, on to the adults next.
Right, I will start with the sections and the White-Orange point section springs to mind. Rowan Cahill and Ray Egan both are training here less than a year and Rowan has been a regular with me, completing FFP, FFPBC, FFW with me in the past and sparring all time and getting himself up the belts too, he has done imself proud. Ray is a regular on Saturdays with Declan in Punch City's and Team MAI and done himself proud too. They fought well in the points for their first time. Rowan also did the Continuous and this was what he loves. It showed! Winning two fights on his way to an extremely close final where he showed great technique and great kicks, he got a very creditable second place. Very impressed and he did me proud, if he is reading this, don't get a big head! well done lads!
Next!
Right, Pauric Briody is next on my list, regular down here for a number of years, he trains hard and came in second in the Brown-Black belt continuous section. Extremely close final with a guy who didn't want to trade with him, Pauric knew what he needs to do to improve and fought smart. He will put it back into his training and is already planning to do the next one, well done dude! Lastly, camera lady herself Shelly Farrell. She has been at MAI for so long, (I think even longer than me!) and this was her first Best of the Best. She trained hard for this one, the mentality of going out and giving her best as she always does. She got to the points final in her section, fighting smart in her first fight but was just short (sorry Shelly couldn't resist) in the final. Still done me proud and was delighted for her. I didn't see her continuous but I do know she fought her heart out, that's what she does! Well done Scrappy-Do!
Overall, it was a long day! As you can imagine! 10am-5pm was the day, long day for everyone but it was totally worth it to see everyone do as well as they did. Team spirit is key when it comes to these type of days, and it was showed from everybody. At one stage I had a parent come up to me, with a MAI member on the mats and ask me what's his name, she then for the whole round was shouting his name and giving him encouragement. It was a family atmosphere and I was so proud of everyone. Big thanks to all the parents who took time out of their day to bring the kids down, big thanks to Arnie and Yzeir who coached other members while I was coaching someone else. Big thanks to Rachel and Shelly who brought their camera and got a massive amount of snaps for us. Big thanks to everyone who recorded the fights, I will be putting them up on YouTube over the next couple of days, big thanks to the members who were not competing on the day that showed their support to everybody.
All in all, a fantastic day, I want a lot more reports from everybody, I am not the only one with an opinion on this! Haha, well done again, here's a pic of everyone at the start of the day, well done once again everyone, you guys did me proud!
