Stephen and I are entering a grappling competition tomorrow in the UK. Thanks to all those who were involved in helping us train up for it over the past couple of weeks. I'll keep you posted.

A couple of weeks ago Rob mentioned going to this competition and whilst I wasn't sure as it appeared to be a very high level I thought why not give it a shot. Ground Control is the biggest event in the Uk with hundreds of competitors many from well known teams like London shootfighters, MMA Academy Liverpool etc. We trained for a couple of weeks frequently twice a day. We were up at around 3.15am yesterday morning to get the first flight over to Manchester and the clocks going forward didn't help. Rob also was cutting weight so not only were we tired but hunger and dehydration were in the mix. The weigh ins didn't happen quite as we thought they were scheduled for every hour and we thought they might do the weigh ins and run the relevant sections. Anyway weights were made no problems so just had to wait for the sections. This gave me the opportunity to look at the standard and it was unbelievably high across the board. I went in to intermediates (under 3 years experience) under 80kgs section think there were around 10 of us. Unfortunately tapped out in my first fight guillotine I think. Talking to my opponent afterwards he had over 20 competitions under his belt this was my first so felt a bit better. My second fight went the distance and I felt it was even enough although my opponent had more submission attempts. Sometimes age has an advantage so got to jump in at the end for the veterans sections and got a silver.
Rob was in the advanced section and you could really see the quality in the section as every move was precise, attempts reversed etc. He looked really comfortable in the section and did really well in every fight getting 3rd.
Special thanks to Louise who gave up her Sunday as well-not many would get up in the middle of the night and not get home till after midnight. thanks for all your support throughout the day it makes all the difference.
All in all it was a brillant experience thanks for the opportunity Rob and for the coaching through training up for this and at the event itself yesterday. Next time though the answer will be no-only joking!

You know it is really rare for kickboxers who train mma as well to even enter this type event which are usually totally dominated by specialised grapplers for major kudos just for sticking your neck out...pardon the pun. Well done guys

I don't think I'll ever try to make weight for a grappling comp again as it was very hard with the weight in just a couple of hours before competing. I was wrecked and drained before it started. As I don't have a bjj coach or a belt in bjj, it's very hard to tell what standard I am at bjj. This comp is one of the biggest and best no gi comps in the uk according to most people. There were 3 sections: beginner, intermediate and advanced. I was unsure how good the advanced section would be and my main objective was to see how I would match up against some of the best grapplers in the uk. I had a tough and fast first fight (6 mins) against the strongest looking fella of the lot and I won but I was very tired afterwards. My second fight was very technical. I was close to submitting him and it went back and forth but in the end he got me with an arm bar - I had tired him out though That managed to secure me a bronze medal as there wasn't loads in my section. Then they asked me if I wanted to do an extra match with another fella - I didn't as I was exhausted but I jumped in anyway. Again, it was very close and I was confident until he got me with a guillotine - I didn't think he'd get it because I had defended one very well in the earlier fights. Obviously I'm programmed to win and I only like coming first but I am very happy that I made a very good representation in the advanced section - I'm a striker remember! or am I now at this stage?! I was very happy with Stephen because his sections were very tough too. Stephen can sometimes be reactive but he pushed the clinch on each of his fights. He also jumped in for the veteran section very late in the day when most people wouldn't have. His conditioning was excellent too. All in all a great experience. Attachments:

Well done to you both going over to England and doing this top standard competition! Bronze and Silver is excellent! It's not easy being a striker and entering these specific types of competitions. Like Declan said, these are usually dominated by specialised grapplers so bringing home the medals is a major achievement. Fair play to both of ya's

That looked like a very tough fight even though you did have time to fix your hair a few times. Congratulations.
