First ever FFBC class complete, and roughly 90% sure I’m still alive. Success.
Having signed up for this a few weeks back, I’ve gotten to experience the lovely build up that is having everyone you mention bootcamp to in the dojo stare back at you with pity in their eyes.
Now, I spent the 3 days previous to this sick in bed – walking up the stairs was a challenge by the end of it. So, naturally, boot camp is a great idea, right? Wrong. The class begins with Eddie telling us how much he likes this course because he gets to shout at people to try harder. He gets straight into it with 100 jumping jacks, because apparently he’s “starting easy”.
This is followed by what seems to be hours of bouncing back and forth. We start with jabs – high, low, higher again. First in the air, then on the bags. This is followed by crosses, left hooks, right hooks and uppercuts. By the time we reach the hooks, my bouncing has turned into more of a sad jog on the spot. But no, my calves definitely aren’t killing me. Eddie hasn’t beaten me yet. By the uppercuts, the occasional twitch from one of my legs is about all I can muster. Around this point, my punching bag appears to be growing a little ginger afro.
‘Take a drink if you need it. Well, you’re definitely gonna need it – so take a drink.’ Nothing like an aul threat to keep you hydrated.
Now for fitness! Cos apparently jumping back and forth for half the class does not count as fitness. 30 seconds jogging, followed by 30 seconds of punching. In the words of our ever sympathetic Eddie, “If you don’t like jogging… too bad.” It’s around set 2 (of 5) that I get the mother of all stitches.
This resulted in me giving Eddie daggers every time I jogged/hobbled past him, because obviously it’s all his fault. I didn't willingly pay for this or anything. He had told us to alternate the direction of our jogging with each set, which really just caused a lot of bumping into each other while running around like headless chickens. I’m fairly certain that was his main motive. We were told to follow the leader as we were jogging, but despite all my hope this never lead us to jogging straight out the door.
This was followed by even more punching, with a few blocks thrown in this time. This part was more technical than fitness based, so it seemed like a nice little break. But, knowing Eddie, I knew this lovely relaxed pace would be short lived. It didn’t take long for me to be proved right.
Tabata training! 20 seconds punching, 20 seconds rest. Repeat 5 times. Doesn’t sound too bad. This’ll be fine. To be honest, I don’t really remember much of those 200 seconds. I think I blocked it out. All I remember is that I’m convinced Eddie was really only giving us 2 seconds rest between punches, which resulted in my bag looking like this:
Nearly finished! Only abs to go. The relief of nearly being free diminishes quite quickly when you see the growing smirk on Eddie’s face. This didn’t start off too bad, just a 30 second plank. However, apparently we’re supposed to be excited about the fact that we’ll be doing planks at each class, and building the time up by 30 seconds each week. Can’t wait for that 2 minute plank! We’re focusing on lower abs this week. Again, I don’t really remember a lot of this. I can only hope that means it was effective.
Having said all that, I feel great today and have convinced myself that it wasn’t really all that hard. Ahh…the bias of time. Bring on tomorrow!
