Boring at work or something, but here it goes.... ;D
Not a day goes by that u have to hear people saying that kickboxing or martial arts where u compete with rules, Doesnt help you in selfdefense. In these art’s you only learn to be sportman and when u train Self defense arts, u really learn perform in real situations, Mostly u hear these things from people who trains purely self defense arts. And every time you hear same arguments…
1.Rules, Theres always referee around, who keeps every1 safe
•This argument makes sense. Because we are used to fight with rules and only few people try bend the rules “mr. nice guy effect” But still I would assert that wont make kickboxer bad in self defense, cos when u are competing or sparring u learn ur pros and cons hard way and in consequence of that u can adept ur skills in real life situation aswell. And I would say that missing ref. will disbenefit only the attacker, cos with normal martial art skill u should be easily safe from ”scary” swing punches.
2.Protective gear.
•Why this makes normal fightsport trainer any worse in SD. I would say using protective gear would just make our readiness higher, cos we have trained full contact fighting and we are used to hard punches.
3.U know when fight is starting
•But fact in this is, that it’s just ur own stupidity if u aren’t aware in threatening situation
When training SD u can improve ur ignorance but not to be stupid. So this argument is only for single guy not for whole sport.
4.U are only fighting in a ring.
•This is true aswell, but still kickboxer is used fight in limited space, so u know what to do when getting cornered. In the other hand there might be situation that you have load’s space around, and I would say this is asset for kickboxer, cos you have learned how move and do ur stuff in smaller place. So this isn’t either disadvantage imo.
5.Psychic training
•Competing isn’t so hard for your head as sreetfight. I just would stated otherwise, cos in a ring you are against the guy who is well trained and knows exactly how to hurt you. In the street its very rare that u will face guy who really knows what to do. Disadvantage is that fight sport trainer isn’t used to defend itself against weapons.
6.Training against only 1 opponent.
•Well i would say to this, if u get attacked by 2 guys who knows what they are doing. It doesn’t matter if you are Bruce Lee himself,u will get ur ass kicked anyways. If not they are just attacking to you just 1to1 in a line. OFC SD training will get prepared to this kind of attack better, cos u go though positioning and how to control attacker, that u might have change to get away.
And point of this post is…. We had similar conversation in 1 Finnish fighting forum and i wanna know what u guys think about kickboxing in self defense use.
