"Battle of the Dojo 6" is coming up on Saturday April 12th, and I can't wait. Looks like there's gonna be a section for everyone, so who's thinking of competing, and how are you gonna train for it?
Personally, I'm gonna do anything I can for black belts. Team training is gonna focus on it too, so I can't wait for that.

I recorded a home movie of myself training for it. I wasn't going to train, but my girlfriend was insistent. Here's the clip.

In all seriousness though, I've had so much going on lately with looking for a job, being sick and other crap in my life that I'm a bit out of shape at the moment and I even had to miss two team sessions (I'm back this week). So I'm not feeling particularly ready for a competition. Not that I'd expect to do particularly well, but having had a few sparring sessions under my belt now I can least acquit myself better than last time, and know what I'm doing out there.

A lot of people will feel the same but there is still plenty of time to get ready for the competition. Win, lose or draw, it's valuable experience. Plus, remember that nearly everyone on top of any fighting circuit has a lot of loses behind them. Best of luck to everyone.

Yup, I'm the same myself, the serious training has to start this week! But all you can do is your best with the time you have. Even if I go out and lose badly straight away, at least I know I have to change/improve something about my fighting.

Club Competition is Saturday week! Do not worry if you don't feel on top of your game at the moment because this competition is specifically to give you experience/knock off the rust. There are divisions for everyone so all fights will be matched up very evenly. This competition will be great to get everyone ready for the upcoming competitions this year. There is no loss of face if you lose to a fellow club member - afterall, they are training at the best club too Best of luck and train hard for the next 2 weeks.

Club competitions are where it's at for preparation for bigger days. One can claim that all sparring is preparing you for competition and that is true however when there is a medal or trophy at stake the adrenalin flows more and nerves kick in more. Club competions are like mock exams for the Leaving Cert absolutely invaluable practice. Best of all your instructors will be refereeing and watching to point out what was good and what needs sharpening up, so you cannot lose.

Great day - Congratulations to everyone that took part and to all that showed up to support. Some great fights. Very close fights because the standard in every section was high. Excellent experience for everyone. Full report coming shortly. Well done again.

I loved every minute, reffing and competing. I thought the standard in every section was exceptional. I'm sure those who have been to external competitions will agree that the fights were of a higher standard in our one.

I agree with every word written in the report. I have been to many events at a national level and above that did not achieve the standard that was shown in the Battle of the Dojo. All of the fights were spirited and sporting. I see a great future for many of the fighters who appeared. Good job guys.

Dear All,
Following on from Declans post where he applauded the excellent standard of fighting I think it only fair to mention and I am sure all the MAI students would agree that the standard of teaching is so high as well as the infectious enthusiam all the instructors bring that there skill at teaching is now more than ever so evident with the level of fighting skills that are been achieved by students of all ages and grades.
Thank you to all the MAI instructors for continually innovating and been an inspiration at each and every training session.
Cheers Phillip
