A girl studying kickboxing in the states sent an email asking me to fill in a questionnaire.
Thought it might interest you
Hi Christine. I hope you are enjoying your kickboxing training.
I am happy to answer your questions and wish you the best of luck with your project
and senior year in general.
1. How long have you/did you enjoy the sport of kickboxing?
I have been involved in Martial Arts but predominantly karate and kickboxing for approximately 35 years now since the age of nine.
2. Where did you take kickboxing/martial arts?
My training was quite diverse and I attended several studios currently happily and heavily involved with
Martial Arts Incorporated in Dublin.
3. What belt level are you get and are you continuing to move up the ranks?
Strangely belt gradings have never been my interest or strong point as I always preferred competition
However I currently hold the rank of Fourth Degree Black Belt in Kickboxing and Second Degree in Shotokan Karate.
4. What are you doing now that involves kickboxing?
I am teaching and training in kickboxing in Martial Arts Incorporated.
5. What kind of tournaments and/or competitions have you participated in?
I have competed in many types of tournament including Shotokan (kata and kumite), Freestyle Points Karate,
Semi and light contact kickboxing, Full contact Kyokushinkai and kickboxing and a couple of open Ju Jutsu tournaments.
Success was high but as any competitor will tell you could have been better lol.
6. How did you fair?
Success was high but as any competitor will tell you could have been better lol. I won several open international tournaments
In Karate and kickboxing.
7. What is your next goal in the world of martial arts?
To continue on the path of self-improvement. I have always appreciated the journey as much as the destination.
8. What advice would you give to someone else hoping to become as skilled in kickboxing as you?
To constantly set goals, to persevere in the efforts to achieve these goals and top never bow your head to negative thoughts or feelings,
Like a cowboy at a rodeo if you fall off the ride, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and jump right back on again.
9. What defensive/offensive moves do your like to use and why?
My favourite offensive move is an advancing jab, cross, jab drag step front leg roundhouse kick as it works well against a retreating opponent.
Favourite defensive is lead leg side kick.
10. Have you ever done or received a K.O. before?
Both. I was knocked out in training once when a partner missed a focus mitt while training axe kick…ouch.
11. How old were you and when did you have your first fight?
I remember it vividly. I was entered by my first Sensei in a Kempo Karate tournament and was scared frigid lol but I got
A third place trophy and was delighted. I was ten years of age.
12. At what age did you get into martial arts and why?
I started at nine years of age as I was being bullied in school my grandfather was ex-military and
A fan of boxing but my mother didn’t like the sound of that lol so Kempo Karate it was.
13. How much do you train during the year/week/month for kickboxing?
I currently teach/train about 26 hours per week but when I am less busy I try to train three times per day.
I go running in the mornings for about forty minutes, then hit the skipping rope and bag work around lunchtime then in the evenings
Teaching kickboxing/cardio kickboxing gets my pulse up again lol.
14. What is your favorite victory to look back on? Who were you up against?
All victories are memorable but if one was to stand out it would be winning The London Open International
In 1992 I had been injured and was just back in training when I was offered a place on the team going there so I accepted
And to my surprise went on to win. The standard at this tournament was really high and I believe the secret to the victory was that
I went there without unrealistic expectations and therefore was very relaxed.
