I only booked this very recently and I'm off to the UK tomorrow to enter a grappling competition. I've competed in a lot of competitions before (karate, kickboxing, mma) but never submission wrestling. My next BAMMA fight is 6 weeks away so hopefully this will be a good way to get in some competitive experience before that. I'll let you all know how I get on.

Just off the phone with Rob - He is taking home the gold as he came 1st in his section - He had 3 fights and won all 3.. Also he didn't even fight at his weight, Rob fought at minus 93kg which is the weight above his!!! Very well done to The Druid - Cant wait to see the footage!!

Yes, it went well for me. As Kiefer said, I entered the -93kg because I normally have to cut weight to make -84 (my normal fighting weight) and I wasn't going to do that for a same day weigh-in comp. At pro level mma you have over 24 hours to rehydrate. There were 2 different sections at that weight - under 1 year grappling experience and over 1 year so I chose the under 1 year......yeah right! I was in with people from all levels. I got a bye through the first round and then I had 3 bouts. It definitely is totally different grappling in practise and grappling in competition. Each bout started from standing so a lot of wrestling was involved. In every bout I managed to get the takedown and scrambles and top positions. I did attempt quite a few submissions. My first opponent tapped to an ezekiel choke from mount. The second fight went the distance (5 mins) and I got the decision. My third fight ended with a rear naked choke or in others words for those old schoolers, a sleeper. I thought I was there incognito until someone recognised me from BAMMA.
The experience was great and I hope it helps me in my mma goals. It was a great validation of my wrestling and ju-jitsu. I didn't think I would win the competition but I did believe I could win each fight - if that makes sense to you. As always, I want to keep improving and to keep gaining experience.
Thanks to Louise for all her support. She was a great coach on the day. Thanks also to all my MAI training partners who helped me get ready over the past couple of weeks.

Hi Rob,
Really sorry to hear about BAMMA. There loss. The new clips of you grappling were great. Your control and technique were faultless. Are you doing a lot of neck strengthing work? The reason I ask was you were powering brilliantly out of the neck clinches when in guard.
Best wishes Phillip

Deadly only thing is (my voice hahahahahahah) . That was some day. I just thought I would write up about that day. Rob decided to do this competition in Bristol as always I went along to video and moral support. When we arrived we were complete outsiders. The Irish over on U.K turf. It wasn't easy, everyone there had there buddies and club around them. They also had warm up partners. I was nervous as hell that day as I didn't know what to expect. But looking back as Phil said in earlier post "faultless" it certainly was. Great day and can't wait to do it again . Great clip Rob well done.
