The story so far: Pro sparring yesterday. Before we sparred we did quite a few drills. They were good and we kept switching partners. At one stage I was partnered up with famous wrestling coach Mike Van Arsdale: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Van_ArsdaleThen I did 5 rounds of sparring. I did gas in round 4 and it didn't help that I was up against Tim Kennedy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Kennedy_(fighter)Everyone reckons that all the visiting fighters struggle with the higher altitude and that's why they come here. I'm not at peak fitness since Christmas but I more than held my own in the other rounds. I know that you all want to know what names are training here so here you go: Rashad Evans, Keith Jardine, Andrei Arlovski, Jon 'Bones' Jones and loads of others that I recognise. Yesterday evening I went down for a grappling class but it never started so I just got in and grappled with the other fighters. I got a good few rounds done until my fitness started to waine. I'm happy because I'm doing well with my technique and strength. Being here will definitely get me even fitter. Today, Mike Van Arsdale took the wrestling class for the pros at 9.30am. It was tough but I was happy with my performance and my fitness was better today. Wrestling training can be more tiring than kb or jj. I was happy when Mike said that he had put us through our paces today and ramped up the class a bit. Heading back to the gym in a little while for some more. Hope you're all getting back into a regular routine at home. Talk to ya later

more story so far: wednesday evening I went back to the gym and did the Kickboxing class which turned out to be nearly an hour of sparring. I was hoping for an easy technique class but what can ya do ha ha. I sparred well though. Thursday morning was pro sparring again. Drills to start with and then I got 6 rounds done with various opponents. I did good in each round and that was my main focus. Thursday evening I just did my own thing. Nothing crazy because I knew Friday morning (this morning) would be tough. This morning was small gloves grappling including ground and pound. We drilled some takedowns from the clinch and then grappled. After that we headed to the sand dunes for some running. I went in the car with Andrei Arlovski. Nobody else seemed to want to go with him for some reason. He is a big and mean looking dude who comes accross like he was genetically engineered in his homeland of Belarus. He was actually very cool and unlike most fighters, he actually liked to talk about fighting and his career so we chatted away. The sand dune running is grueling. Again the oxygen here is less than home. It didn't help that the dunes looked vertical and the sand gave way on each step! Up and down for 7 sets. I was happy to see that everyone seemed to find it tough and I did the 7 sets along with all of them. Andrei and Kyle Noke decided to do an extra 3! On the way back he gave me some protein and a bottle of water so that's it, I'm his friend for life! Check out Keith Jardine's customized jeep. It looks cooler in real life though. Didn't Dana White give him that? Attachments:

even more story so far:
Despite having done the grappling on Friday morning and then the sand dune running, I went back to the gym to train at 3.30pm but it was closing. A great excuse not to train.....or so you'd think......I did a load of strength work back in my hotel room before making full use of the hot tub!
Nothing much was happening on saturday so I went for a run. It's a good cycle up to the park and then I did some interval running (fartleg is what it's called!). You do 5 mins jog, 2 mins medium, 1 min fast. That equals one set. I did 4 sets without any breaks and with my gum shield in. I then finished with some sprint work and cycled back to my beloved hot tub haha.
Sunday was a rest day so no major news.
Back with a BANG Monday morning with pro mma sparring (small gloves) at 9.30am. I'm definitely getting used to the altitude as my fitness was better but I would love to be even fitter - I think that's why most people come here for at least 4 weeks. They say it takes 2 weeks to fully climatize. I'm doing good considering I'm hanging with some of the best fighters in the World who are already fully climatized. My striking worked well but I was a bit more interested in pushing it to the grapple. Their clinch and scrambling was good and I got through several rounds of warm up, 4 rounds of sparring, a round on the bag and a round of shadow boxing.
Monday evening (last night) I simply went over my own stuff and did some basic kickboxing and conditioning.
This morning (Tuesday 25/01/11) was another good and hard session. 16 once gloves and all the gear on. We did several rounds to warm up and then I did 5 rounds of sparring. My second round was with Carlos Condit (remember he recently knocked Dan Hardy out?) and I was impressed with his range. He is a good range fighter like me so it was interesting. He's a good kicker too. I landed a nice reverse punch blitz and backfist at one stage. I'm working my own stuff a lot more these days and it's really working for me. My 5th and last round was with Diego Sanchez. He's put on a lot of weight. He had difficulty with my range and he kept waving me to brawl with him like he does when he fights in the UFC. It was kind of funny. He kept trying to go for takedowns (he's a wrestling base) and managed to barely get me with one so I returned the favour with my own double leg takedown. That was it, session over. Even though I only mentioned 2 names, everyone is good here. It's where the best come to get better and it's great to be able to get in with them.
Training again later and then 2 further days. Looking forward to coming home.

the last of the story: no major news since my last post. More of the same and will be finishing up my training today. I leave very early in the morning - about 5am I think and I don't get home until Saturday morning (it's 7 hours behind here). 3 planes again, dreading that. I'd say I'll be back here to train again at some stage. So, what did I learn? Well, I learnt that you take your life into your own hands if you cycle on the road. There are no laws against cycling on the footpath (sorry.....the sidewalk!) and you don't have to have lights on your bike at night. I also found out that it's fully legal to carry a knife as long as the blade is under 6 inches! And check out the magazine I bought today at the supermarket! You wouldn't get a magazine like that at Easons! oh, you wanted to know what I learnt at Jacksons' MMA - well, you'll have to come training with me then. I'll be back to the grind as normal on Monday. Thanks for all the texts and emails while I was away - always good to hear from home. Have a nice day Attachments:
