The next CQC course is on August 10th 2008. If you haven't attended this course already then you really should because it is all about using what really works in a highly efficient manner to defend yourself quickly. Price is 150 euro but there is a large discount to all MAI members.

I'd recommend this to anyone. I loved the CQC course when I did it, you learn so much in one day, and it stays with you, too. The things you learn give you the confidence to know you can handle a dangerous situation. Definitely worth the 150 euro and great fun too.

It would be great for you especially seeing as there is a lot of self-defence requirements for your Black Belt. Plus you'll be able to avail of the discount. Get your 20 euro deposit into us and we'll hold a place for you. By the way, nice one with your skipathon score!

Thanks Rob I've put my name down today and looking forward to learning loads on the day. Finding the self defence set a whole different mindset as you don't have time to go through the technique in your mind just have to reactive effectively.

It's going to be a great CQC course August 10th because there are several new people signed up and several MAI members signed up plus Sensei Declan Kidd is raring to go. Any last minute stragglers looking to sign up for this make sure you do it now because there are only a few places left and the next CQC course isn't until the end of November!

Hey Stephen,
Will you stick up a blog/review of the course in this thread? (if you survive that is!)
I think there are a couple of people attending from MAI D15 too which will be the first time anyone from that Dojo has attended the CQC course. Should be a good mix.

After the biblical floods on Saturday I was nearly afraid to open the curtains on Sunday morning for fear of having to do the CQC underwater. Got up early and watched John Joe Joyce boxing in the Olympics before heading in to the dojo. There was a big group there -13 people the majority of whom I’d never seen or trained with before (Rob, Declan where do you get them all from?)
Declan gave a quick introduction and overview of what the day would entail. We got a bit of a history lesson on the birth of CQC in downtown Shanghai 1920s style-sounded like an interesting place. Back in Dublin 2008 we quickly got stuck in and started with our stance and defensive guard around which most the techniques would be based. Despite Declan’s advice to leave kickboxing at the door as this was not a kickboxing course I found myself slipping into the traditional kickboxing stance and guard something I don’t do enough of when actually doing kickboxing! From this defensive stance we paired off and started using heel palms to stop an aggressor. We were given many examples of martial artists, boxers etc who got injured when involved in a street fight because they threw punches and broke their hand, wrist etc.
We were all probably a bit quiet at the start but things definitely livened up when we added shouts to the heel palms. Censors prevent me from putting up some of the language used but it would stop most in their tracks.
Things got nastier from there as elbows, knees and foot stamps were thrown into the mix. After that we moved on to some useful kicks. We would all love to be able to through flashy 360 hook kicks to the head cinema style but the kicks we went through were the simple yet effective kicks that would work in the street.
Before lunch Declan ran through what to do if our attacker had a weapon with knifes being increasingly prevalent in Dublin. If confronted with a weapon the best thing to do is run but that’s not always possible so going back to our defensive guard we could try to keep our distance or at least prevent more damaging cuts. We worked in some avoidance maneuvers before trying to disarm, hit and get away. Although Declan said this wasn’t a physical course it was intensive your nerves are up as you facing a different situation than normal training and you have to visualize an actual attack and try to respond. Anyway lunch was much needed after 3 hours.
After the break we looked at personal space and being aware of the surrounding environment and got some useful tips about reducing the risk of being attacked for example being careful around atms, not carrying much cash (I usually do this anyway and my girlfriend always gives out because she thinks I’m being cheap and trying to avoid paying for things but now I’ve a great excuse… its only because I don’t want us to be attacked dear! Nice one! Declan also managed to undo Lynx’s mutli million euro advertising campaign of the last few years by using lynx as a repellant. This was to demonstrate that everyday objects can be used to protect us although I prefer the thought of all those women running towards me…
I hope to do my black belt in the near future and part of the grade involves a self defence set. All the instructors couldn’t recommend this course highly enough in helping them prepare for their grade. Most if not all of the techniques were covered and we got one or two additional tips as well. I particularly liked the idea of barking like a dog and biting when in a headlock…Eddie Lawlor got really freaked out by that one.
On a more sensitive note we also covered sexual attacks and I recognized one of the techniques was similar to something we were shown when doing MMA in team training.
The finale of the day was the Redman where we all got a chance to go one on one with the Redman for a minute and use what we had learned throughout the day. I heard that in the crazy dragons summer camp that they all just went for the Redman and some of our group couldn’t resist the temptation as it’s not often Declan invites you to hit him anywhere you like and as hard as you like.
So that was the CQC course. 6 hours is intensive and we even ran over time but I really enjoyed this course which was good value for money. I hope I never have to use it but if needed after yesterday would feel more able to deal with situations. Declan kept things simple and had lots of good stories to lighten up the day. I would also like to thank his able assistant for the day Eddie Lawlor for his help and also to everyone else who participated. I would recommend this to everyone. One of the good things at MAI is that there are always opportunities to try different things like this and I’m eager to try more.
Some photos were taken yesterday which hopefully will be posted up soon.

Great report Stephen, I was there teaching the regular Sunday classes, and I would have loved to have done this course again. I'm glad you enjoyed it and learned from it Stephen, and it looked like the rest of the people attending loved it as well. The next one is on the 23rd of November for those who missed this one...

I really should drop in here more but spend all my time training lol I really enjoyed teaching this course as it was a really good enthusiastic group. I learn something new myself every time I teach it because I get to see how different mentalities and physiques handle the stuff. My observation from inside the redman proved that those who didn't want to fight and used what they learned on the course hurt me the most...ouch
