I think in history there's been too many great fighters to mention, but nowadays, we're looking at an entirely new breed of ufc fighter starting to develop- the all rounder. In the past, it's usually been fighters are proficient at striking or grappling, not both, and that's how they ended their fights. Right now, however, the likes of George Saint Pierre, Anderson Silva and BJ Penn, who have all greatly improved their weaknesses, are dominating the circuit.
In my opinion, GSP is the best fighter right now. He's got great strikes (not just brawling), and is extremely good on the ground, too. I haven't seen too much of him on his back recently, but all that menas is that he can't be taken down easily. he seems to want to strike from anywhere, then finish with submissions if he has to, which in my opinion is the best strategy.
I think the days of 'striking vs. grappling' are on the way out, and 'who will be the best all round fighter' is on the way in. It would be interesting to see one of the greats of the past in their prime facing one of the current best, to see if the standard of fighter is increasing or not. Cue Rocky Balboa- style comeback for Ken Shamrock or Royce gracie...
