Hello everybody. I thought this might spark some interest. Many people take up martial arts trining for fitness or for self defence but how many have made a lifestyle decision. My original reason was for self defence as I was bullied as a child. However at the age of thirty (a long time ago now I switched from Karate which I really loved to kickboxing. This was a lifestyle decision. I had jsut read a book by Benny 'The Jet' Urquidez about his training and philosophy and decided it was what I wanted. Runnning in the morning watching diet aoiding alcohol (ok this one I slip on from time to time lol). So I believe that what emerged is a definite improvement in every aspect on the old me. So honestly why not view it this way. As the balance in your life. Stressed in work?? sedentary lifestyle, wanna stop smoking etc etc let us all use the martial arts not just for fitness or self defence but to form ourselves as individuals to make ourselves better on the outside but also on the inside. Share your stories of success or otherwise and help each other along. This forum came about throught the hardwork of my friends and colleagues, let us be grateful fro it and show appreciation in the best way possible, by using it regularly. I am only too willing to communicate with members who need advice or (I am not immodest enough to accept) offer it to me. I look forward to hearing from you all. Declan

Well i started training in Martial arts inc nearly 3 years ago and i can honestly say that it has had a massive positive change in my personal life. Since i started training i have stopped smoking and i don't touch alcohol anymore. I have also left a job i wasn't happy in to pursue a different career, and i know for a fact that if i had not started Kick boxing a few years ago i would never of had the confidence or the courage to leave my job and start all over again. To start training in Martial arts inc was the best decision i ever made. The instructors have created a very positive atmosphere to train in and if anybody take that positivity into their personal life it can only help in your personal development.

hey Deco. I started training from the start with the ambition to compete in competitions, whether I do good bad or in between I just love the buzz of getting in the ring, and bringing all the hard hours of training and trying to make them work on your opponent. Of course to keep fit too, but its such a learning experience, even though I am only training 2 and bit years you appreciate those who have there black belts and compete at a high level realy have to work hard to get there and it drives you on , so that some day you can reach that level. As for diet and looking after my self week to week, since I started training my diet has improved 100 % because when you start kickboxing you realise that what you put in to your body realy counts and will make that engine tick nicely!!So basically if your into training it takes over your life and that can only be a positve change to your own personal life style

Deadly thread Declan. I just want to know what you are going to do when you catch up with those bullies?!!! ha ha
Everyone: Would you give back all your martial arts training and everything you have learnt and gained from martial arts in return for the money back that you have put into it? I have put all the money I've ever had into martial arts so it would come to quite an amount. You could then multiply that amount by any number and I wouldn't take it. Martial Arts changes lives and I don't care who thinks it's corny but M.A.I. is in the business of changing lives. Without mentioning any names, all of the instructors have seen first hand many times (make that nearly every time) the amazing differences in people and watched as confidence and happiness levels grow while needless aggressiveness and feelings of inferiority decrease. I have seen many people literally being saved by martial arts in one way or another. I couldn't imagine my life or personality without martial arts & MAI and my answer will be exactly the same in another few decades.

robert, I wouldnt exchange the money why would I? People spend there money on silly things and have no passions that they want to work hard and acheive goals in,I would rather put my money into something that will benefit me in the long run , ie :discipline, repect, health, control, etc, than throw it away on some thing materialistic,
You have got to invest to be the best........

Hello all. Glad to see this thread provoked some response. As for what I would do if I caught up with those bullies now I'd like to think that I would realise that without them i would never have started the amazing journey that has been my martial arts career (But I guess I'd break a few heads hehe) Keep it coming guys and keep up the training. I made a decision a long time ago to start training with MAI. I've had my ups and downs with training and my PMA (thanks for that one Keith). I am happy to say that 99.9% of my time training has been very enjoyable, even if I do complain a lot. Imagine what I would be like if I didn't train.
I have trained with most of the instructors in MAI and I honestly have to say that I have never had a bad class, unless I have been in a negative frame of mind. Martial Arts training is a lifestyle decision for me, I get as much from the training as I put into it. It can take up a lot of time but it is always enjoyable. Every time I leave a class I feel good about myself. It honestly is one of the most important decisions I have made in my life. For my own personal benefit, MAI has given and continues to give me another reason to enjoy life.
I am a healthier slug today because of MAI.

Hi all , I to made a decision to join Mai 7 yrs approx now , and i can say it is a major part of my life . I honestly don't know why I never took it up as a kid . But as an adult I love my training and love the club . I'm never in a bad mood , when i walk through those doors and even if i am , i soon snap out of it . I have trained with everyone in the dojo and all the instructors are brill even when i am in negative frame of mind . When i started martial arts I was one person who would hide behind a punch bag so the instructor wouldn't see me , I had no interest in syllabus , and had no interest in competing . Well that soon changed watching other girls getting stuck in and i wanted the same , so martial arts has given me a hell of alot more confidence , in myself . As a lifestyle decision , yes it was . I worked for a family business and gave it all up to go into the dream job i have today . I love our club and wouldn't change a single thing in this long journey I'm traveling with MAI . Everyday is something new and I'm fitter and healthier than i ever was . Thats all for now . Good thread Declan .
